10 Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Predictions for 2009
New York, NY (Vocus) December 19, 2008
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the leading national organization of board-certified plastic surgeons who specialize in cosmetic surgery, offers its predictions for cosmetic surgery in 2009. Predictions are based on interviews with leading plastic surgeons around the country.
Aesthetic Medicine has seen a dramatic increase in the diversity of the patients treated over the past decade and this trend is expected to continue to grow stronger than ever, with applications that cater to all people. The appeal of both aesthetic surgery and cosmetic medicine will continue to spread across the spectrum of our population, as plastic surgeons further tailor treatments to meet the sometimes unique needs of that expanding population.
The growth and popularity of cosmetic fillers (Evolence, Juvederm, Restylane, etc.) will continue to increase as products continue to evolve and new players enter the market.
As our population increasingly realizes the dangers and health consequences of obesity, the number of patients seeking plastic surgery procedures for body contouring after dramatic weight loss (abdominoplasty, lower body lift, upper arm lift, etc.) will rise in 2009.
Reloxin (an injectable form of Botulinum Toxin Type A) will gain FDA approval and compete with Botox (the most popular cosmetic procedure for the past 5 years) and other similar products may begin to enter pre-market clinical trials.
Consumers looking for a bargain on cosmetic procedures will unfortunately lead to an increase in horror stories about “discount injectables” bought offshore and cosmetic medicine and cosmetic surgical procedures performed by untrained or poorly trained practitioners.
Experimental techniques for non-invasive fat removal (SonoScultpt, UltraShape) as a future alternative or adjunct to liposuction (lipoplasty) surgery, will continue be tested in clinical trials.
Men will represent a growing segment of the aesthetic surgery market. (According to a February 2008 consumer survey commissioned by ASAPS, 57 percent of men approve of cosmetic surgery, and 20 percent would consider having cosmetic surgery. Seventy-nine percent (79%) of American men surveyed said they would not be embarrassed if people in addition to their family and close friends knew they had undergone cosmetic surgery.)
As the popularity of non surgical and minimally invasive procedures continues to grow; surgeons and manufacturers will develop new techniques and products that advance the science, produce even better results and lessen recovery time.
Cosmetic surgery “vacations” will become less popular as educated consumers understand the safety and risk issues associated with surgical procedures and travel. Surgery performed by board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeons, in accredited facilities where follow-up care is available will continue to be the safest option and the best value.
Following the trend in increased consumer sophistication regarding healthcare choices, board certification of practitioners, and accreditation of surgical facilities will play an even more important role in choosing a cosmetic surgeon.

Survey Shows That More Than Half of Americans Approve of Cosmetic Plastic Surgery
New York, NY (Vocus/PRWEB) April 04, 2011
A new survey shows that more than half (51%) of all Americans regardless of income approve of cosmetic plastic surgery, this is a 3% increase from 2009. According to the February 2011 report, 52% of respondents with an income of under $ 25K approve of cosmetic surgery (48% of respondents with an income between $ 25K-$ 50K approve, 45% of respondents with an income between $ 50K-$ 75K approve, and 56% of respondents with an income above $ 75K approve) and 29% of the respondents who earn under $ 25K would consider cosmetic surgery for themselves.
“As the numbers suggest, people in every income bracket, single or married, male or female, view plastic surgery as a reasonable option today,” said Felmont F. Eaves III, MD, President of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). “Taking care of yourself and paying attention to physical appearance is increasingly important to everyone. As both traditional surgical procedures have been improved and refined, and new nonsurgical options have become available, aesthetic plastic surgeons have more to offer to our patients.”
Other key findings of the study include:
53% of women and 49% of men say they approve of cosmetic surgery.
67% of Americans would not be embarrassed if their friends and family knew they had cosmetic surgery.
27% of married Americans and 33% of unmarried Americans would consider cosmetic surgery for themselves, now or in the future.
67% of white Americans and 72% of non-white Americans say they would not be embarrassed about having cosmetic surgery.
Most Americans (71%) said their attitude toward cosmetic surgery had not changed in the last five years, though 20% said it was ‘more favorable.’
Out of all age groups, men and women between the ages of 18 and 24 are the most likely to consider plastic surgery for themselves now or in the future (37%).
77% of Americans 65 or older say they would not be embarrassed about having cosmetic surgery.
The study was commissioned by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and conducted by the independent research firm Synovate.
According to 2010 ASAPS Cosmetic Surgery Statistics, almost 9.5 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States last year. Women had nearly 8.6 million cosmetic procedures (92 percent of total) and men had more than 750,000 procedures (8 percent of total). Overall, the number of surgical procedures increased by almost 9 percent and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures decreased 9 percent from 2010. To access the complete 2010 ASAPS Statistics Click Here.

New Information Resource about Breast Augmentation Surgery — The Cosmetic Surgery Directory
Denver, CO (PRWEB) April 5, 2006
Breast augmentation surgery is the second most popular cosmetic surgery procedures according to The American Society of Plastic Surgery. With the advent of the Internet, there is an abundance of information about breast augmentation as well as other cosmetic surgery procedures. Unfortunately, much of that information only highlights the benefits with glamorous before and after photos.
“We realized that consumers are looking for a comprehensive information resource about breast augmentation and other cosmetic surgery procedures,” said Shannon Montoya, director of account services for The Cosmetic Surgery Directory – http://www.the-cosmetic-surgery-directory.com. “We are committed to becoming that information resource.”
The Cosmetic Surgery Directory has an extensive list of articles about breast augmentation surgery – http://www.the-cosmetic-surgery-directory.com/articles_breastaug.html – including articles that address the risks and complications about breast augmentation surgery and capsular contracture. In addition, the Cosmetic Surgery Directory also includes articles about topical subjects like saline vs. silicone gel breast implants as well as information about TUBA breast augmentation compared with trans-axillary breast augmentation – http://www.the-cosmetic-surgery-directory.com/article_tuba.html. It even includes information about breast implant surgery for teens.
According to Ms. Montoya, The Cosmetic Surgery Directory already has a number of articles on each cosmetic surgery procedure, and is writing more about each procedure every week. The articles are written by plastic surgeons, nurses and writers who have done a lot of research on each cosmetic surgery topic.
“We intend to be the ultimate information resource for cosmetic surgery patients. We will research the good, bad and ugly about cosmetic surgery and put all the information in one easy to access place.”
